st. Petersburg State University have developed a non-contact thermometer that can measure extremely low temperatures, including those in space. This device uses neodymium, a material often used to make filters in magnets and photographic lenses. The new technology is based on the use of neodymium ion-activated oxide nanoparticles and makes it possible to measure temperatures that are difficult to measure with conventional methods.

Temperature measurement is often difficult or impossible, especially in extreme environments such as inside a processor chip or in space. Standard methods of contact temperature measurement may be ineffective or impossible, but non-contact thermometry, which uses glowing phosphors based on ambient temperature, is helpful in such situations. But it does not work at very low temperatures.

The scientists solved this problem by proposing to use oxide nanoparticles activated with neodymium ions to measure temperature. They created a special composition that was applied to the surface of the object, and after the solution evaporated, a layer of oxide remained on the object. Then, when irradiated with infrared light, the particles begin to glow, and this glow allows you to determine the temperature.

This technology could be useful in research in the field of low-temperature superconductors and in measuring temperatures in space. The scientists also plan to extend the measured temperature range to extremely low temperatures, such as the temperature of liquid helium.
