The stubbornness of the unions caused the bankruptcy of the second most populous city in England. The Birmingham government went bankrupt due to an inability to meet financial obligations to women who are underpaid for their work duties.
The British city of Birmingham has declared bankruptcy. This was announced on its website by the Birmingham City Council.
As of Tuesday, September 5, the city will only comply with social security obligations.
Birmingham’s bankruptcy was due to complaints from unions, which accused the authorities of underestimating the wages of women compared to those of men, who are mostly in exclusively female professions. Among these professions, Birmingham City Council singled out nurses and teaching assistants.
Birmingham has paid compensation to the claimants for the last ten years and the city’s obligations to them amount to £14 million per month. Birmingham’s debt volume to the claimants has reached £760 million, an amount the city does not have.
Birmingham is the second most populous city in England after London. In 2019, 1.14 million people live in it.
