According to a report published by dfndr laba laboratory specializing in cybersecurity psafe, almost 500 found fake profiles using streaming platform names On Twitter, Facebook, TikTok and Instagram. The network of accounts scams victims and in total already represents about 654k followers and 2.5 million likes.

Fake profiles impersonate various streaming services such as: Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney Plus. Therefore, criminals offer users “free subscriptions” and spread malware as well as steal personal information on a fake registration site.

Phishing messages can come via SMS, messaging apps or email. When clicked, the victim is taken to a fake website, where there is a registration form for the victim to receive the alleged free subscription code. Despite, The information provided by the victim in this fake record will then be used to implement new fraud.”said Emilio Simoni, PSafe chief security manager.

Beware of fake profiles

Fake registration pages ask for CPF, address, phone number and even credit card data. In this way, criminals use the data for profile theft on social networks, loans and credit card cloning. To avoid scams by fake profiles, Simioni recommends installing security software.

Between January and April of this year, dfndr blocked fake profile matches per hour.

PSafe also highlighted some security tips so users can stay alert:

  • Install a security solution on your device;
  • Make sure the page you are following is official and reliable;
  • Avoid clicking and sharing links from unknown sources, especially via messaging apps and social networks;
  • Never inform personal data about links of dubious origin;
  • Make a habit of being suspicious of information shared online, especially when it comes to promotions, gifts, discounts or job promises.
