After Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin’s X (formerly Twitter) account was hacked, his subscribers suffered a total loss of $691,000. The hackers posted a malicious link in his name to receive a free NFT, and users who confirmed this transaction lost all assets in their wallets.

On September 9, hackers managed to hack the account on the social network X (formerly Twitter) of Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin. As a result, they posted a link in his name to receive a free NFT from Consensys. In fact, the site the scammers’ tweet linked to stole crypto wallets after receiving transaction confirmation.

20 minutes after the appearance of the attackers’ post, the fact of the hack confirmed Vitalik’s father, who urged not to follow the link and wait for support to return access to the account. During this time, some of Buterin’s subscribers already managed to interact with the malicious site and lost their assets. Among the stolen NFTs were tokens from the CryptoPunk collection, the cost of which starts at $76,000.

According to preliminary estimates, in total, Vitalik Buterin subscribers lost $691 thousand worth of NFTs and cryptocurrencies due to the hack. Some of the victims blame the creator of Ethereum for the incident, pointing out that he does not carefully monitor the security of his social media accounts. There has been no official comment from Buterin at the time of writing the news.
