To support these faster storage devices, SiliconMotion is accelerating the release of SM2508 chips. These controllers are expected to compete with Phison’s E26, which offers data transfer speeds of up to 14 GB/s and 3D TLC/QLC NAND compatibility.
The SM2508 controller is manufactured by TSMC using 6nm process technology and is equipped with a dual-core ARM Cortex R8 processor for computing tasks. Notably, it has a low TDP of 3.5W, making it efficient for laptop use. While PCIe Gen5 SSDs offer nearly twice the speed of Gen4 SSDs, they generate more heat, which poses a problem for laptop manufacturers.
Manufacturers will likely showcase laptops with Gen5 SSDs at CES 2024.
