European Space Agency (ESA) cosmonaut Andreas Mogensen will become the new commander of the International Space Station (ISS) when the current commander, Roscosmos astronaut Sergei Prokopyev, returns to Earth.
“Over the next 12 days there will be ten of us on board, while Soyuz MS-23 with Frank [Рубио]Sergei [Прокопьевым] and Dmitri [Петелиным] He won’t leave the station. At that very moment Expedition 70 will officially begin and I will assume responsibilities as Commander of the ISS,” Mogensen wrote in his X account.
Mogensen, 46, will become the first Dane in history to take over as commander of the ISS.
The current station commander, Sergei Prokopyev, arrived at the ISS on September 21, 2022, as part of the Soyuz MS-22 mission together with his Roscosmos colleague Dmitry Petelin and NASA cosmonaut Francisco Rubio.
The ship’s crew was supposed to spend six months in space, but due to damage to the Soyuz in December, the mission was extended by another six months. The Soyuz MS-23 spacecraft arrived at the station unmanned to replace the damaged spacecraft. The return of Prokopyev, Petelin and Rubio to Earth is scheduled for September 27.
