This information was learned thanks to leaked internal chats released as part of the US Federal Trade Commission’s lawsuit against Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision.
At the meeting attended by CEO Satya Nadella and other senior officials, the possibility of moving away from the traditional console model consisting of fixed hardware standards was discussed.
Instead, the company considered a more flexible system similar to Windows.
The current console generation began in 2020 with the release of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. At the same time, Sony is significantly ahead of Microsoft in sales, while Microsoft is focusing on the development of gaming services, including the popular Xbox Game Pass.
Note that although plans for the new Xbox to launch in 2028 have been unofficially announced, these are consistent with earlier, more general statements from Microsoft lawyers.
