They created a genetically modified bacteria that can decompose plastic in salt water.
According to recent estimates, more than 170 trillion pieces of plastic are floating in the world’s oceans. This garbage not only pollutes water but also poses a threat to marine life. The so-called “Great Pacific Garbage Patch,” located between the Hawaiian Islands and the coast of California, is particularly dangerous.
The scientists used two strains of bacteria: Vibrio natriegens, which is well adapted to salt water, and Ideonella sakaiensis, known for its ability to break down polyethylene terephthalate (PET).
Using genetic engineering, researchers combined the best characteristics of these microorganisms to create a bacteria that can effectively break down plastic in salt water.
