Apple Vice President of Camera Software Development John McCormack gave an interview to Numerama.

During it, McCormack explained why the iPhone 15 Pro Max only has 5x optical zoom, and not 10x, as in the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. The reason lies in the quality of the resource that the company managed to achieve success with this particular zoom, but for 10x technology such qualities are not yet available.

5x zoom is something we can stabilize incredibly well. If you notice the 10x zoom… unless you have the steadiest hands in the world or state, it’s really hard to use.

— John McCormack

Apple’s Senior Director of iPhone Product Marketing Maxime Veron, who was also interviewed, added that the new iPhone 15 Pro Max lens is available with an ƒ/2.8 aperture for “excellent light control.”

By comparison, the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10x lens has an aperture of ƒ/4.9. More reliable diaphragm. Allows you to capture more light, which can be especially useful for night mode photos.
