Spotify announced this Monday (25): It will use artificial intelligence (AI) to recreate podcasters’ voices in other languages. The translation tool uses OpenAI technology Whisper to adapt English speech to other languages.
First, the tool will be used to adapt content from English sections into Spanish. In the coming weeks, the tool will be expanded to include French and German.
The adaptation is done through Whisper, a technology that can translate English content into other languages (and vice versa). In addition to transcribing the content, the Spotify tool reproduces the adapted text with a synthetic voice.
“By incorporating the creator’s own voice, Voice Translation gives listeners around the world the power to discover and be inspired by new podcasters more authentically than ever before,” Ziad, Spotify’s vice president of personalization, said in a statement.
Synthetic voice may also be the creation of OpenAI. The company also introduced a number of new features, including the ability to generate a “human” voice from text using artificial intelligence. But in this case, the scope of the tool is limited considering the security risks.
No release date in Portuguese
Some episodes adapted with artificial intelligence are now available on Spotify. An example is a section Lex Friedman Podcast, one of the first partners of the platform. All episodes translated with AI voice are available on the official Spotify playlist.
Also launch does not mention the availability of the tool in Brazilian Portuguese. Therefore, it is likely that language support is not yet in the company’s plans.
