Unlike other artificial intelligence systems that require large amounts of data and supercomputers, this system produces new structures from scratch. It can create robots that do not imitate previous models created by humans.
The design of the walking robot developed by artificial intelligence includes three legs, fins on the back, a flat nose and holes all over the body. Although the researchers do not fully understand the purpose of the holes, they believe they give the robot flexibility and allow it to walk more efficiently by reducing weight.
AI’s ability to create entirely new designs could find application in fields such as disaster relief and healthcare, where new robot designs could be extremely valuable.
