Yandex members have founded 330 startups since 2009, according to the results of the Yandex Family study. During this time, projects raised over $1 billion and the peak of project launches occurred between 2019 and 2022.
The Yandex Family community presented the results of a study on a map of startups, among the founders of which are people from Yandex. Data on startups and the investments they attracted were studied from 2009 to 2023.
Over the past 14 years, Yandex people have founded 330 startups. The peak of launches occurred in the period from 2019 to 2022: 110 new projects were launched in 2021-2022 alone.
85% of startups build global businesses, 15% focus on local markets. The areas of AI, open source and data systems represented 15.2% of the projects, EdTech – 12.5% and e-commerce – 10.3%. More than 72% of the projects are still in the early stages of development.
During the period analyzed, 84 startups on the list attracted $1 billion in investments from more than 280 investors. The majority of funds raised occurred in the areas of AI, open source and data systems (24.1%), EdTech (16.9%), and e-commerce (13.3%).
The largest investments are made in the ClickHouse service ($300 million), the founder of which is former Yandex employee Alexey Milovidov. E-commerce service Accel Club raised $170 million and online learning school Skyeng raised $55 million.
The Yandex Family closed community was created in 2022. Only current and former Yandex employees can access it. Community members help each other find partners for new projects.
