Internet provider Dish Network will have to pay a fine of $150,000 for failing to remove the EchoStar-7 satellite, which has been in space for nearly 20 years, from orbit. The penalty was imposed because the company simply sent the spacecraft into a “destruction orbit,” lowering it to an altitude low enough to create a risk of orbital debris.

“As satellite operations become more widespread and the space economy accelerates, we need to ensure that operators meet their obligations. “This is a groundbreaking agreement that makes clear that the FCC has strong enforcement powers and the ability to enforce vital space debris rules,” said Loyan A. Egal, director of the FCC Bureau of Enforcement.
