Its author, Laurent Ballesta, received the main prize in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year category.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year, developed and produced by the Natural History Museum in London, selected the winning image from around 50,000 entries.

Ballesta, a marine biologist, became the second photographer in the competition’s 59-year history to win the competition’s top title.

This species of crab is a true living fossil, more than 100 million years old, living in the depths of the ocean.

Photo details and description: “Depicts a living fossil known for its rare blue blood wading through the mud in sheltered waters off Pangatalan Island in the Philippines. He is accompanied by three fish in the hope of getting food from the formidable creature.

“It was amazing to see the horseshoe crab so alive and well in its natural habitat in such a hauntingly beautiful manner,” said jury chair and editor Kathy Moran in a press release accompanying the photo.

“We are faced with an ancient species that is endangered and also critical to human health. This photo is fluorescent.
