VBScript was introduced in 1996 and its latest version, 5.8, was released in 2010. Originally popular among system administrators for automating tasks, VBScript was replaced by PowerShell in 2006. Microsoft announced that VBScript provides active scripting to a variety of environments, including scripting for Web clients in Internet Explorer and scripting for Web servers in Internet Information Service.
However, it lacked support in other browsers, leading web developers without special Microsoft settings to opt for JavaScript for client-side tasks. In future versions of Windows, VBScript will be available as an optional feature and will be removed from the operating system.
