As noted by Alexandra Martynova and Tatyana Korshunova, authors of the scientific publication and leading researchers at the Zoological Museum of Moscow State University and the Institute of Developmental Biology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, this new species was named “Zvezda” because of its features. an unusual appearance with a constellation of bright white spots on its body.

These marine molluscs, which reach only 2 cm in length and have a beautiful red color, do not wear shells when they become adults and feed on other invertebrates. It was discovered in the waters of the Kuril Islands at a depth of about 20 meters during an expedition organized by the Russian Geographical Society.

The scientific consequences of this discovery are not limited to new species. The scientists also presented revised data on the genus Diaphoreolis as a whole. They also found that Zvezda’s closest relative lived in the North Atlantic, not the Pacific Ocean. This is an interesting development in the study of living diversity on the planet.
