ASUS has announced a monitor with a refresh rate of 500Hz, especially for gamers. The company claims that the ROG Swift monitor is the fastest display you can get right now. But there are plenty of reasons not to rush straight to the store as soon as the screen comes out.

ASUS describes the new monitor as “the display with the lowest latency and highest refresh rate ever.” The 24-inch screen offers 1080p resolution and has a TN panel that allows for high refresh rates. Thanks to G-Sync, hertz is equal to frames per second. In short: a screen for real gamers.

But do you really need such a screen as a gamer? ASUS has focused entirely on high refresh rate, and that seems to come at the expense of other things. For example, choosing a tn panel is a bit outdated. Compared to IPS and VA panels, the tn offers the least wide viewing angles, while color reproduction is generally disappointing.

Also, in the last few years, IPS and VA panels have made significant advances in terms of both price and speed. There are enough monitors on the market now that offer both high refresh rate and high resolution.

While most 1080p and 1440p displays typically offer 144Hz and 240Hz refresh rates, 4K monitors often have to settle for 60Hz. Experts state that you can really see the difference between 60Hz and 144Hz, but it is already much harder to discern the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz.

To put it in numbers: at 60 Hz the screen is refreshed every 16.6 milliseconds, at 144 Hz this is already 6.9 ms. With 240 Hz you come to 4.2 ms, and this is of course a much smaller difference, just as 2.8 ms 360 Hz is a smaller step to find, as we previously wrote in an article about tips for choosing the best gaming monitor. outside.

The tn panel selection looks a bit outdated compared to IPS and VA panels.

Solution

Then isn’t 500Hz a bit redundant? Your chances of actually seeing a difference seem very small. Also, the hardware in your PC must support these speeds.

And we haven’t even mentioned the price tag yet. ASUS has yet to give an idea about the price of the ROG Swift 500Hz, but the display probably won’t be cheap.

All the factors combined will probably not make all gamers want to buy this monitor. A 27-inch 1440p monitor with a 144 to 165 Hz refresh rate might be a better starting point for them.
