The film “The Curse of the Nun 2” was released in Russia. Thus, horror fans received not only a sequel to the 2018 gothic horror film “The Nun,” but, in fact, a continuation of the famous “Conjuring” trilogy by James Wan.
We have already watched the film and are ready to answer three main questions:
• is it possible to watch a movie that is not the old original branch of the Conjuring world?
• is this a worthy continuation of the first part?
• Is this horror film scary or passable and not worth watching?
First things first.
This is a self-contained story that features old acquaintances.
What is the movie about: A series of mysterious deaths sweep across Europe, attracting attention. Catholic Church. The main character of the first part, Irene, finds herself in a position where the church again trusts her to fight the evil demon Valak. Having not completely completed her role last time, the heroine goes to France to observe the events taking place.
Everyone’s The Conjuring has been heralded with its ups and downs, and 2018’s The Curse of Hannini clearly falls into the latter category. Some of the reasons for this include the dull storyline and the repeated use of corny jump scares.
The sequel, The Curse of the Nun 2, can be described in many ways, but it’s definitely not boring. This work by director Michael Chavez is chaotic but exciting moviewhich seems to finally justify the existence of a sub-series in the franchise.
And one of the main advantages is that it is not necessary to know the entire backstory and events of other parts. The writers skillfully leave clues for unprepared viewers. As we watch, we will learn who Valak is and how this demon survived the first part.
To do this, the main character must become something necessary between a shrewd detective and Indiana Jones searching for a diplomatic document. A simple nun? No. Detective, archaeologist and specialist in occult sciences rolled into one.
“The Curse of the Nun 2” continues the tradition of the “Conjuring” franchise, restoration of the universe This story is intertwined with the main plot.
On a narrative level, the film offers a standard story with spirits and ancient demons as the antagonists. The film acknowledges its similarities with the leader and uses them to its advantage, preparing to hear what will eventually unfold.
Scary, but there are nuances
Despite its lack of dramatic power, the new story makes up for it with so-called special effects and cleverly choreographed security scenes. The tension here is much more pronounced than in the previous film. This ties into the line of understanding that there aren’t enough subsequent Conjuring films after Part 2.
It’s especially nice that the film isn’t afraid to put its key legislators—the kids—in danger. Or hint that any of the film’s characters could become president.
“The Curse of the Nun 2” quickly gets down to business, starting frighten viewer. However, the narrative quickly begins to lose its power when the film builds on the franchise’s familiar tropes and unwittingly submits to the structural limitations of its predecessors.
Horror skillfully doses the growing tension, causing more and more tangible horror. This comes to a head in one of the most excruciatingly unusual moments, after which you look at the wall of magazine collages in a new way.
The problem with many frightening scenes is that the picture is too dark, making it impossible to make out what is happening, and there are too close-ups of faces blocking what is happening around. Thus, periodic observation is simple cannot “assess the scale of the threat”.
The operator simply begins to use the technique “you can’t see all the horror, this should make it even worse.” The hero is very scared, and so should you. But this was done only the first couple of times.
Unfortunately, some moments are repetitive when one of the other characters wanders into the rise of a dark power and encounters some creepy ghost. Albeit in different communications.
Insects, monsters, ghostly children – although the film does not turn the horror genre on its head, the image of Valak is more reminiscent of a compilation than a terrifying movie monster, sudden fears coming one after another, sometimes surprising with their originality.
The demon remains playfully vicious, taunting its victims before dispatching them in the bloodiest possible way. This Pennywise is minimal, without signature jokes, but still creepy.
Even the final battle with the monster reminiscent of the denouement with the famous clown – Lots of cat-and-mouse chase scenes, children’s screams and scary scenes.
It should be noted that this thematic element is also much more fun. The main characters’ girlfriend is somewhat of a conflicted character in the film, but ultimately comes to the conclusion that God becomes someone who actually wants to believe in religious power.
The musical accompaniment of Marco Beltrami, although not something memorable after leaving the hall, nevertheless, at the right moments, perfectly conveys the feeling of horror.
You can watch it, but only fans will like it
Uneven in its scares, The Nun 2 makes up for it by being a modern, progressive story with great visual direction and a clear core idea. It shows the problems with where The Conjuring universe might be heading.
The 2018 spin-off and its next sequel aim to recapture the magic of the main series. It even cast Vera Farmiga’s younger sister Taissa, who looks a lot like her, as the leading nun. But this is not enough.
For example, there is no authenticity of what is happening here.
Both films do not pay much attention to the historical and geographical context, to what happens as a result of the separation of transformation and continents. Even though The Curse of Shanghini 2 is set in 1956 France, this does not affect the film’s visual appeal, nor does it create a sense of place and time.
All the characters speak in English (as seen in the original), and there are no details or external factors that could add realism or show care and love on the part of the production team.
There are also some illogicalities that stand out, such as the Vatican’s decision to train one nun to single-handedly destroy a demon.
conclusions
The sequel is much better than its predecessor in every aspect. Using more atmospheric footage of the girls’ school, gothic locations and suspenseful moments, director Michael Chavez provides what was missing from previous works in the Conjuring universe.
The script is more balanced, the concept of the film is more disturbing, as it explores horror on a deeper level, not limited to just the same annoying jump scares.
But all this is still not enough to become a real worthy, self-sufficient and truly frightening horror film.
