AMD CEO Lisa Su is leaving the board of directors of telecommunications equipment maker Cisco. She has been there since 2020.
“On October 4, Michelle Burns, Roderick McGeary and Dr. Lisa Su notified Cisco Systems of their decision not to seek re-election at Cisco’s 2023 Annual Meeting of Shareholders. Ms. Burns, Mr. McGeary and Dr. Su will continue to serve through the 2023 annual meeting,” Cisco said in a notice filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The statement does not indicate the reasons for this decision. Furthermore, Lisa Su herself has not yet made any comments.
Tom’s Hardware cites a conflict of interest as a possible reason. In 2020, when Su joined Cisco’s board, AMD was just beginning to gain market share in servers and PCs from Intel, “but in three years, AMD became much bigger.”
In 2022, AMD bought shares of DPU manufacturer Pensando Systems, which to some extent is a Cisco competitor, for $1.9 billion. Additionally, the corporation this year launched EPYC 8004 series Siena processors designed for edge server and communications systems, which also overlap with Cisco’s area of interest.
