As part of The Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live conference on Tuesday, October 17, OpenAI CEO Sam Altmanwas categorical, stating that the work as we know it now will end due to AI in 25 years, and provided his recipe for allowing humanity to continue living in the future.
“We’re really going to have to do something about this transition,” Altman said, adding that society will have to deal with the speed at which change is happening. “People need freedom of action, the ability to influence. “We must become the architects of the future together.”
“I believe that the need to work in society will disappear in 25 years for those countries that adapt these technologies,” he said. “I think there is a place for a universal basic income that guarantees a minimum standard and allows people to work on what they want.”
Altman said a basic income guarantee would not be enough. People will need opportunities for creative expression and the opportunity to “add something to the trajectory of the species,” he said.
Another opinion on the matter was expressed by Vinod Khosla, a prominent venture capitalist whose company was an early supporter of OpenAI, who presented a timeline for the transformation of work in the field of AI. In 10 years, AI will be able to “do 80% of 80% of all the jobs we know today,” said Khosla, a technology investor and entrepreneur with more than 40 years of experience.
