Google’s threat analysis team has discovered that WinRAR has been exploited several times since the beginning of 2023.
WinRAR vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary code when a Windows user uploads PNG files to a ZIP archive. The exploit has also been used to target cryptocurrency trading accounts since April 2023.
Security holes have already been closed in versions of WinRAR 6.23 and 6.24 for Windows. However, they cannot be installed automatically, only manually from the official website.
In the case of Windows 11, RAR files can be opened through built-in OS tools. [The Verge]
