Apple’s MagSafe Battery Pack has received a useful firmware update that allows an external iPhone battery to wirelessly charge a smartphone at 7.5W. This has always been 5 watts so far. The highest charging power the MagSafe Battery Pack can produce is still 15W. This only happens when the battery itself is connected to a power source of 20 watts or more.
Users can update the external battery to firmware version 2.7.b.0 in two ways; The MagSafe Battery Pack automatically updates within a week when paired with an iPhone. By connecting the battery to an iPad or Mac with a Lightning cable, the update installs immediately, according to Apple. This takes about 5 minutes.
It’s unclear why Apple increased the charging speed with a firmware update. The Cupertino company warns on the MagSafe Battery Pack’s support page that the iPhone may get a little warmer while charging, as the magnetic battery takes up most of the back of the smartphone. When iPhone gets too hot, it automatically limits battery charging to a maximum of 80 percent of power.
