From December 2019 to March 2022, the Russian X-ray Observatory, equipped with two telescopes – the Russian ART-XC and the German eROSITA – carried out a full survey of the sky located at L2 Lagrange, 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth. point.
The main purpose of ART-XC was to study the galactic plane of the Milky Way using hard X-rays. The telescope scanned the plane in squares of approximately 3×3 degrees, moving about one degree each day.
This research made it possible to detect objects with extreme energy release, such as binary systems containing neutron stars and black holes, supernova remnants and others.
The ART-XC telescope faced challenges such as the lack of brightness of objects in hard X-rays and absorption by interstellar dust and gas, but it still managed to overcome these obstacles and show distant and faint objects in the Milky Way.
