While unlined paper packaging is generally less durable than plastic, Amazon says it has developed paper rolls that are flexible, can withstand some weather conditions, can be heat-sealed and can be recycled.
But some critics argue that Amazon’s commitments in the US, its biggest market, lack a clear, quantitative and time-bound plan compared to commitments in other countries such as the UK and Germany. Amazon said the work will take several years, so the timing of the full transition is unclear.
