The press service noted that these satellite transmitters are designed to monitor the movements of marine mammals. Data from these transmitters will be available until April 2024. The scientists also took 30 genetic samples from the animals for further research.
Walruses come to Cape Tiutei-Sale every year, and researchers continue to monitor this population. The press service added that this year the walrus population includes males, females and a larger number of calves, which is diverse in terms of gender and age, which is a rare occurrence.
One of the positive results of the research was that walruses began to move to the left bank of the Tiutei-Yakha River, where it is calmer and has limited human access. This is due to the creation of a protected area that contributes to the preservation of walruses and their habitat.
