According to the plans, electronic passports were supposed to be plastic cards with built-in electronic storage media. The project of this system was jointly developed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Digital Development and other relevant institutions. However, in June 2022, the head of the Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev, announced that the introduction of electronic passports in the country was temporarily postponed.
Valentina Kazakova emphasized that the possibility of introducing electronic passports to promote informatics is included in the legislation, but the technical aspects of this task have not yet been resolved. Therefore, the rollout of electronic passports will continue in the future and the final decision will depend on the technical readiness for this step.
