The Kimberley Process diamond certification system has summarized the results of diamond mining, production and export in 2022. According to the organization, Russia accounts for a third of the production of these gemstones, with the country also becoming the third exporter, only behind Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

Russia’s share in the world diamond production market reached 35% for the first time – 41.9 out of 119.96 million carats.

Of the 119.96 million carats of diamonds produced in the world in 2022, 41.9 million come from Russia, which represents 35% of the world market, RIA Novosti writes. Previously, Russia produced about a third of all diamonds in the world, but until last year the country’s share did not exceed 33%.

Russia is still about 20 million carats away from becoming the leader in diamond production: in 2022, African countries produced 61.6 million carats and Botswana produced the largest volume: 24.5 million carats. Canada (16.3 million carats) and Brazil (158 thousand carats) were also successful in diamond extraction.

The export leaders were the United Arab Emirates (89.4 million carats, 27% of world exports) and Europe (75.2 million carats, 22.7%). Russia thus took third place with an export volume of 36.7 million carats (followed by Botswana – 27.1 million carats, India – 26.1 million carats, Canada – 16.3 million carats).

In 2023-2024 the situation on the global diamond market is likely to change significantly, as logistics are already difficult due to sanctions and EU authorities are discussing a ban on the export of diamonds from the Russian Federation and They are developing plans to reject Russian supplies.
