iFixit published an initial teardown video of the new MacBook Pro with an M3 processor.

Judging by the video, practically nothing has changed in the laptops except the chip itself. What’s more interesting in this analysis is how Apple managed to ensure that fewer fingerprints remain on the new black body of the device.

The company made the anodized lid with a smoother surface on a microscopic level. This allows more light to be reflected, creating an overall dark hue.

We noticed a brighter spot in the “Space Gray” department because the absence of this phenomenon resulted in a more gradual effect of electromagnetic radiation on the light photon regime. Space Black and its characteristic etching process appear as a more subdued color because our—or in this case, camera—picks up the more diffusely reflective light coming from the surface to the eye.

It is because of the increased roughness that the lid has a matte effect.

And because of these features of the lid, oil traces have a worse effect on the body, which is why fingerprints are less noticeable than on a smooth glossy finish.
