The Ministry of Finance proposed to force banks to refund part of the money stolen by fraudsters from customer accounts. Therefore, credit institutions will have to create a more effective cybersecurity system, writes Kommersant.
The banking community was surprised by this approach; Lawyers considered the initiative difficult to implement and of little use. Representatives of credit institutions expect shared responsibility together with authorities and regulators.
According to the Central Bank, 14.2 billion rubles were stolen from Russians in 2022. In 2023, this amount will increase to 19 billion rubles, Sberbank estimates.
At the end of August, Tinkoff announced the launch of a service to return funds stolen by telephone scammers. It will block suspicious transactions using an AI-enhanced fraud monitoring system.
