iFixit has sent a letter to the US Federal Trade Commission demanding new rules in the DIY appliance repair law.
Due to some “blocks” registered by manufacturers, customers and some service centers, they cannot properly repair equipment, including Apple gadgets. The company suggests entering the following points:
• Consumable components must be interchangeable and easily accessible throughout the life of the product.
• Components that commonly break must be interchangeable and readily available as repair parts.
• The user must be able to take damaged products to a repair facility of his choice or perform the repair himself.
• When a manufacturer stops supporting a product, its core functionality must remain intact and the independent repair shop must be able to continue repairs.
• Certain components of two identical devices must be interchangeable without complying with manufacturer’s requirements (not applicable to Apple devices).
• Independent repair shops must not disclose personal information to customers to the manufacturer.
Previously, Apple supported the law on self-repair, but in its operations in Spain. Some parts simply cannot be replaced without valid identification.
