The report also casts doubt on the possibility that the lander and orbiter will be ready for launch in 2028; The likely full life cycle cost will be between $8 billion and $11 billion, significantly higher than initial estimates.
Despite the challenges outlined above, NASA remains committed to the MSR project, which is an integral part of plans for a human mission to Mars in the 2030s and is critical to understanding the possibility of life on the Red Planet.
