Starting in December 2023, Messenger backups containing chats and media files on Android devices will begin to count towards the disk space limits of Google accounts.

This change differs from the previous plan created in 2018, where WhatsApp backups were not included in Google Drive’s storage limit.

The latest update means that the standard 15GB of free storage provided to every Google account will now include the space taken up by the WhatsApp backup.

Google described its offer as generous, noting that it was “three times larger than most mobile platforms” and that it compared favorably with Apple’s iCloud service.

The company also emphasized that this arrangement makes the WhatsApp backup experience on Android compatible with other platforms.
