The “Help Me Write” feature is designed to help you write a good reply message in Gmail and other apps. However, critics argue that AI-generated responses lack the depth and personality of human writing, instead creating inflated and formulaic messages.
The examples presented during the talk showed how AI-generated text could be used in scenarios like hiring. The automatically generated response, although longer and more stylized, failed to capture the essence of human interaction and reinforced the notion that it was necessary to follow the overzealous American business language.
While AI has the potential to improve typing by offering unique perspectives or effectively summarizing data, Google’s implementation doesn’t seem right. Text rendering is currently based on a prediction system with limited English proficiency, making it suitable for formal writing only. As a result, the responses produced often do not meet the actual needs of communication.
While writing AI tools serves certain purposes, they should not set strict standards or undermine the value of human expression.
