For the first time, artificial intelligence has predicted the weather more accurately than meteorologists using traditional scientific approaches. DeepMind’s GraphCast neural network achieved such success. He was especially successful in predicting extreme weather events.
Google DeepMind’s GrapCast neural network predicted the weather more accurately than traditional scientific calculations by meteorologists. It is the first time that AI has obtained better results than humans in this area, notes the scientific magazine Science.
GraphCast was able to make a more accurate forecast for 90% of 1,380 parameters of weather conditions, including wind direction, atmospheric pressure, and air temperature. The neural network was especially good at predicting extreme weather events, according to the study.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Matthew Chantry, coordinator of the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, said that artificial intelligence was a thousand times more efficient than traditional weather forecasting methods in terms of energy consumption.
