This information sheds light on the company’s strategy for its digital store. Google Play Store was originally known as Android Market.
Eric Chu, head of the Android developer ecosystem, confirmed that the company will not use Android Market as a profit center and will only charge a small fee to cover transaction and billing costs.
At the time, Google’s revenue share was only 5%; 25% went to telecom operators and 30% to application developers.
However, the situation has changed. By 2020, the Google Play Store had become one of the company’s most profitable businesses, with an operating margin of 65%, generating $4.4 billion in operating revenue in the first half of 2020.
