Scientists selected 86 people to conduct the experiment. They were divided into two groups. While one group had to send messages via WhatsApp, the other group did not send any messages. Participants then turned off notifications on their smartphones and placed them face down. Then they spent some time in the virtual reality environment. Throughout the experiment, experts measured the electrodermal activity of the skin, that is, the activity of the autonomic nervous system.
It turned out that the group that sent messages throughout the process was more stressed. These individuals also became more anxious when asked to stop using their cell phones, and their emotional arousal levels increased significantly when they were allowed to pick up a smartphone again.
The results of this study show that smartphones themselves are not the cause of psychological problems in people.
