In such systems, planets orbit close together, which allows comets to move or “jump” from one planet’s orbit to another, reducing their speed. When slowed down enough, comets can crash into a planet’s surface and reveal intact molecules thought to be the precursors of life.
Although comets did not play a significant role in the origin of life, the study suggests that these systems may be promising places to search for life beyond our solar system.
