While previous studies have shown the presence of phosphorus near the Sun and in other inner regions of the galaxy, it has not been observed in the outer parts of the galaxy.

This discovery refutes two proposed scenarios involving the migration of supernova material or an extragalactic source such as the Magellanic clouds. Further research is needed to determine the origin of this phosphorus in the outer regions of the Milky Way.
