They developed thermal transistors that can cool chips without using moving parts and reduce processor temperatures by 13 times compared to traditional cooling methods.

Modern chips, especially high-performance ones, face serious overheating problems. Reducing the size of transistors results in increased thermal density as there is less area for heat to dissipate.

New thermal transistors work by dissipating heat across the entire surface of the processor using an electric field. They consist of a single molecule layer of molecules that becomes thermally conductive when electricity is applied.

The new discovery could be a solution to the thermal density problem that arose after Dennard’s law, which said that reducing the size of transistors should lead to a decrease in thermal density, became obsolete in the mid-2000s. Since then, the power/heat-area ratio has been constantly increasing.
