Tochka Bank analyzed data on the dynamics of the Russian market and identified the most promising areas for opening a new business: online trade in home and office goods, freight transportation and retail trade are among the first.

The business areas most resistant to changes in Russia were also identified.

The most change-resistant business areas in Russia have been named.

Areas of activity were compared in terms of popularity, stability, profitability and longevity of companies. Experts analyzed data on registrations and liquidations of companies from the Unified State Register of Legal Entities and the Federal Tax Service from January 2017 to August 2023: during this time, companies had three calm years and three complicated by the pandemic, the economic and political situation.

Most popular business

This block includes the most popular areas among entrepreneurs who have opened their own businesses over the past 5.5 years. The analysis was carried out based on the number of companies registered by OKVED categories in 2023.

The top 3 included:

  • online commerce of goods for home and office (47.9)
  • cargo transportation (49.4)

  • retail trade (47.1)

In fourth place was the retail trade of other goods in specialized stores (47.7), and in fifth place was the construction of residential and non-residential buildings (41.2).

The most stable business.

Despite its popularity and significant market share (5.74%), the freight transport sector turned out to be unstable to crises: in 2017, the first half of 2023, it had the highest number of company liquidations per 100 companies.

In second and third place by the number of closures is the cosmetics trade and retail trade, fourth place is occupied by the construction of residential and non-residential buildings, fifth place is occupied by wholesale trade.

Intellectual property leasing stands out as the most resilient area and with the fewest business closures. The second and third places are occupied by mining services and the activities of holding companies.

The most profitable business

The highest revenues in all segments in the last four years, including the pandemic, were produced by trade, with the exception of motor vehicle trade.

In small businesses, the first place in terms of turnover is occupied by wholesale trade in products, and in the microsegment, other specialized wholesale trade.

The longest lasting business.

Regardless of industry and company size, companies live an average of 7.2 years, analysts have found. Among the commercial sectors, fishing and fish farming companies turned out to be the longest-lived.

General rating of the average life expectancy of companies registered in the Unified State Register of Legal Entities since 2002, including those that were founded earlier (since 1991) and transferred to the register later:

  • fishing and fish farming: 17.2 years;

  • provision of social services: 16.9 years;

  • real estate transactions: 16.9 years;

  • collection and disposal of waste and recyclable materials: 16.4 years;

  • wholesale trade: 16.3 years.

Companies in the microsegment last just over 6 years: the most durable businesses are those in the mineral and veterinary products sectors. In the small segment, the average life is about 12 years; the long-livers are software development, electrical equipment production and gas production.

In the medium segment, the average life is 14 years, with reinsurance, veterinary medicine and pipeline transportation being the longest-lived sectors.
