In 2022, the volume of the Russian artificial intelligence (AI) market will exceed 650 billion rubles. This is 18% more than in 2021. As the industry develops, the need for AI specialists also grows, writes Vedomosti.

By 2030, Russia will need 70,000 AI specialists

According to the government’s preliminary forecasts, by 2030 artificial intelligence will be introduced in 95% of the sectors of the Russian economy and the country will need 70 thousand specialists in this field. Universities are currently training 3,000 developers, data scientists and machine learning engineers.

Experts say the biggest challenge is the lack of teaching staff to implement AI programs in the regions. Advanced training will not completely solve the problem; This will require other government support measures. For example, attracting leading AI specialists to launch elite educational programs at regional universities.

  • In December 2022, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development, Maksut Shadayev, estimated the number of IT specialists who left Russia at 100,000, i.e. 10% of the total number. Shadayev noted that 80% of IT specialists still work for Russian companies, although they are not located in Russia.
  • In February 2023, State Duma Chairman Viacheslav Volodin stated that 60% of IT specialists who had previously left had returned to Russia. They work in the same companies where they worked before leaving the country.
