The press service noted that scientists simulated various scenarios for the development of the lake, taking into account the increase in temperature of the glacier on which Dolk is located. Forecast results showed that within the next five years the lake could freeze to a depth of 7 meters, about a quarter of its original depth.

Dolk Lake became the subject of research after its breakthrough in 2018, which caused a large gap in the glacier. Scientists believe that these studies will help to better understand the processes occurring in subglacial lakes and their connection with climate change.

St. Sergei Popov, Associate Professor of the Department of Land Hydrology at St. Petersburg State University, stated that the modeling is in agreement with field observations, which shows the reliability of the results.

Scientists used climate data from 2012 to 2023 to model different scenarios for the lake’s development, all leading to the same trend: the degradation of Dolk Lake.
