Finland is preparing to open border points with Russia at midnight on December 14. The dismantling will only take a few hours, Heikki Ahtiainen, deputy commander of the border guard service for southeastern Finland, told Yle.
There are no plans to remove all fences immediately, as they may be needed again in the future. In addition, the border service is ready, if necessary, to expand restrictions on the eastern border with Russia.
On November 18, Finnish authorities closed four checkpoints on the land border with Russia: Vaalimaa – Torfyanovka, Nuijamaa – Brusnichnoe, Imatra – Svetogorsk and Niirala – Värtsilä. On November 24, Kuusamo-Suoperä, Vartius-Lyttä and Salla-Salla were closed.
The government explained the decision to almost completely close the border with Russia due to the influx of asylum-seeking migrants using the Russian Federation as a transit country.
