As mining companies use underwater robots to extract minerals, the environmental damage of deep-sea mining worries scientists, diplomats and environmental activists.
Ethan Elkind, climate program director at the Center for the Law, Energy and Environment at the University of California at Berkeley, said automakers are avoiding deep-sea mining to avoid environmental damage in sensitive underwater areas that can occur when mining begins.
More than 700 marine scientists signed a petition calling for a moratorium on seabed mining, supported by 13 countries. Some automakers, including BMW, Renault, Rivian, Volvo and VW, have publicly supported a moratorium on seabed mining. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a permanent ban on seabed mining.
