Multirotor-type unmanned aerial vehicles, created by the Drone Solutions company specifically for working in the Arctic, Hornet, will be tested in 2024 with Sovcomflot. Before this, the devices will have to undergo major modifications (in particular, to increase flight autonomy) and, if the tests are successful, the drones will be used to mark icebergs to ensure the safety of maritime traffic on the Sea Route of the North.
This was reported to TASS by the company’s press service and clarified that in 2023 the Hornets have already participated in test flights: “As part of the project, the Hornet drone was tested in the Kara Sea in July-September 2023.”
This was within the framework of the Arktech accelerator, whose goal is to find personnel and solutions that contribute to the development of the Arctic. And after this pilot project, it became clear that it was necessary to increase the flight duration of the device.
A generator and an 11-liter fuel tank provided the Hornets with about three hours of uninterrupted flight. But for the work to be effective in the waters of the Northern Sea Route, it is necessary to increase this figure.
The company Drone Solutions was registered in 2018 and develops unmanned aerial vehicles for search and rescue and environmental tasks. One of their most recognizable products is the all-weather SeaDrone, which is also designed for use in arctic conditions.
