Cases of data leaks at Russian companies have increased by a third this year, Kaspersky Lab research shows. There were 133 cases of leaks in total, but there were fewer announcements about them. The volume of published data increased by 33%.
More than half of the leaks contained information related to passwords. Although passwords are stored encrypted in databases, weak algorithms can allow attackers to crack the passwords. In some cases, attackers removed columns containing password information that could indicate they were planning to sell data or conduct a cyberattack.
While most leaks occurred in the small and medium business segments, the number of incidents in large companies increased by 1.5 times. It is stated that 71 percent of the leaked data was revealed within the year it was stolen, and 55 percent of the databases were made public within one month after the alleged leak.
This year Telegram has become the main source of data distribution; 67% of leak announcements came from there, while in 2022 the main ones were the shadow forums. Kaspersky Lab claims that blocking communities does not lead to a change in the situation regarding data distribution resources.
