The recall covers 15 different models from the 2020 and 2021 lineup, including popular vehicles such as the Toyota Camry, Rav4, Sienna, as well as luxury Lexus models such as the RX350 and ES350. The culprit in the recall is a possible short circuit in the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensor, which is responsible for determining the occupancy of the front passenger seats.
The OCS sensor plays an important role in determining whether the passenger is an adult or a child based on its weight. If a child is detected, the airbag may not deploy to prevent possible harm, as the power of the airbag is unsafe for a small person.
Toyota’s statement warns that a short circuit in the OCS sensor could cause the airbags to fail to deploy when they should, or vice versa.
To date, Toyota has not reported any injuries resulting from this issue.
Owners of affected vehicles will receive notifications from Toyota asking them to visit a Toyota or Lexus dealer by mid-February 2024. The faulty sensor will be checked and replaced free of charge.
