If you are currently diagnosed with depression, here are some foods that may help improve your mood.

Fish. The relationship between vitamin D deficiency and depression has been scientifically proven. Fish such as trout, tuna, salmon and mackerel are particularly high in this substance and omega-3 fatty acids. Regular consumption of foods rich in omega-3 relieves depression in people deficient in these compounds.

Lean protein food. A study of nearly 18,000 American adults found that consuming protein reduced the risk of depression. These foods also contain plenty of vitamin B12, and B vitamins have a positive effect on brain function and mental health.

dark leafy greens. A systematic review of 12 studies found that low magnesium levels are common in people with depression.

Green tea. Some studies show that it may improve mood through the amino acid L-theanine. It is known that this substance has a beneficial effect on brain function.

Nuts and seeds. Some of its health benefits are due to L-tryptophan. It is an essential amino acid that the body needs to produce serotonin, a chemical that plays an important role in depression.

“Ancient Grains”. These are spelled, barley, quinoa and buckwheat. They contain complex carbohydrates and have a low glycemic index. One study showed that participants who ate a diet containing high glycemic index foods were more likely to experience depressed mood later in life compared to those who ate low glycemic index foods.
