Argentine President Javier Miley told Channel 13 that in a conversation with him, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed interest in Argentine lithium deposits. This metal is used in the production of batteries for electric vehicles.

Javier Miley: Musk is interested in developing lithium deposits in Argentina

“Elon Musk, the United States government and American companies are interested in Argentine lithium,” Miley told La Nación.

The country’s president clarified that foreign companies need a legal framework that guarantees respect for property rights “so they can make money.”

Argentina, along with Australia, Chile and China, is one of the four largest lithium producers in the world. The Latin American country, together with Chile and Bolivia, forms the so-called lithium triangle, an area that contains more than half of the world’s lithium reserves.

Lithium is the main component of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. Last spring, Elon Musk admitted that Tesla could begin mining and processing metal on an industrial scale for its own production.

“There is no shortage of the element itself; lithium is found almost anywhere on Earth, but the rate of extraction and processing is low,” said the billionaire.
