According to Canalys experts, this decision will lead to more than 240 million devices worldwide being retired and possibly disposed of as electronic waste.

This number of devices is approximately 1/5 of the total number of computers running Windows 10. If we imagine that all these devices are laptops and put them together, their height will exceed the diameter of the Moon by 600 km.

Microsoft plans to offer paid Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for three years after the end of general support, including for individual users.

But this doesn’t solve the problem of millions of devices that may be retired.

The company’s decision raises important questions about digital sustainability and environmental impact.
